Founded by the New Zealand born Bruce McLaren, who also drove his own cars but was sadly killed during testing in 1970. It was between 1984 and 1991 that the team had its major success (6 constructors and 7 drivers championships) when the team was bought by Ron Dennis and John Barnard designed the cars. During this period both Senna and Prost won three drivers championships each and Lauda one. With the loss of the Honda engine in 1992, there was a lean period until Hakkinen and the Mercedes engine delivered two team championships and two drivers championships in the late 1990’s After this the team were towards the front of the grid, but not able to compete with Ferrari, until Hamilton arrived in the 2007 season. With the arrival of the turbo-hybrid engines the team struggled but has gradually become more competitive particularly during 2020. They finally won another constructors championship in 2024.
