Mercedes team history
Mercedes involvement in Formula 1 started in the 1930's with its successful "Silver Arrow" cars. During the early 1950's Mercedes ran cars, with
Fangio winning the Drivers Championship in 1954 and 1955, though not as a constructor. The company then withdrew from Formula 1. Mercedes returned to F1 in the early 1990's supplying engines to
Sauber and then in 1995 they started supplying engines to
McLaren. Between 1995 and 2009 Mercedes powered
McLaren's won three drivers and one constructors championships. In 2009 Mercedes supplied engines to the new
Brawn GP team who won both the drivers and constructors championships. At the end of 2009 Mercedes bought a controlling stake in
Brawn GP to run the team under the Mercedes name for 2010 and sold their stake in
McLaren and they also signed Michael Schumacher out of retirement to race for them. They signed Lewis Hamilton for the 2013 season. With the change in regulations and the introduction of the turbo-hybrid engines in 2014 Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes dominated both the drivers and the constructors championships.
